I am closing my studio...
… and saying goodbye to a lovely space and a lot of stuff (mostly really vintage recording gear) but I’m also keeping my most-favourite stuff, writing a regular column on a reputable music blog, making a new album and playing a lot of shows …
This was one of my favourite times at the studio: http://okaynovels.com/directory.html
Here is my new column:...

Ghosts
I was at my favorite cafe, just about an hour ago, working on a lyric that’s been turning around in my head for the past few days. It’s a quaint little cafe, tucked away on one of the less beaten paths in K. Market - well, it used to be. I first started going there because the place was not well known, or liked, but as of late the place has become more and more “popular”...

Tumblr-esque Things Over at the Other Blog →
I did some particularly tumblr-like stuff over at papermaps.net — namely I posted many pictures of us working in the studio(s) on our next album. There are no less than 3 blogposts worth of this stuff over there. Maybe I’ll post more (yet unpublished) pictures here on tumblr. BTW, we are still working …
One more post for “tumblr catch up day.” This is our self-titled album (released April 19, 2011). CDs are available across Canada in just about any major record store (HMV, Sunrise, your fave indie shop). The rest of the world (and Canadians with computers) can download the album at most digital outlets like iTunes, Maple Music, Zunior, Bandcamp, CDBaby, etc.
Well, I think we are all caught...

About This Blog
I admit, I’ve neglected this tumblr blog for much too long. I’m turning over a new leaf here — today.
I’ve decided this tumblr site should not just be a ”carbon copy” of our main website, papermaps.net. I’ve removed all copied posts from papermaps.net (fed by the RSS — when it was working which was rare) and I’ve left only the really old...

EX~PO supports ARRINGTON DE DIONYSO -- Oct. 2
We are super excited to be on this bill, supporting the legendary member of Old Time Relijun and K-Records alumni, Arrington De Dionyso. You can get tickets at Rotate This and Soundscapes.
Here’s what promoter Dan Burke wrote about this exciting forthcoming event:
“Arrington D. from OLD TIME RELIJUN is the ultimate avant-gurardian angel of indie-rock. His Malaikat Dan Singa...

The Big Push, Ongoing ~~ Autumn
Hello Young Pupil,
I wish you a happy semester and remind you to keep a fine balance between academics and leisure. You are only young and free for so long. Perhaps your school days are long-gone? Then I invite you to breath in the crisp fall air and think back to those halcyon days. Doesn’t that air breath new life into you? Remember those nights of debauchery? The ones when you could drink...

Monday Sept. 13 @ The Drake Underground
Hi,
The next EX~PO show is a “special TIFF” edition of Elvis Mondays at the Drake — Double bill with Wendy Leung (which also includes Yours Truly on spacious guitar). It’s like one band for the price of two — no wait — nevermind it’s free …:)

Big Push Day 3 and 4 out of 5.
The end is in sight. Thanks to my friends Nathan (Ruby Coast) and Andy (Utopium) I’ve been making big strides to finish this album. Yesterday we very nearly completed an entire song (piano, organ, drums, bass, guitar, vocals) called “Coddled.” I just need the band members to sing on the final chorus. The tune has been mulling around in my head for over a year and it came out...

The Big Push, day 1 and 2 of 5
This week is the “Big Push” for EX~PO, when we try to finish recording our album. My studio has no outside bookings this week, so we are taking advantage. This is currently day 2 out of 5. I’ll let you know how it goes. So far this week, I have semi-mixed one song, recorded some of Wendy’s last few vocal parts. Today I would like to record some vibraphone for a remake of...

Gearing Up for NXNE ~ June 17 @ the Boat
I’m excited about a few things this week. First, I had the most amazing experience this weekend — it all started when Bosco Mann (aka Gabriel Roth) called the studio because the Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings were on their way to Toronto for their gig at the Sound Academy and were “in a pinch” to get something down onto tape. Next thing I knew, we (myself and Jay Sad)...

Description
A random “google blog buzz” came up in our stats for Sonicbids. For those who don’t know, Sonicbids is a website used by many bands (both small and large) for applying or registering for major music festivals like CMF, NXNE, SXSW, etc. Anyway, this is what came up:
“We are probably the first and only indie-twee-britpop-rock, video game-movie-travel-food-gadget ...

Streaming Music
Hi,
So if you visit http://www.ex-pomusic.com/music.html (our “music page”), you should find a little application bar at the bottom of the screen that allows you to stream some EX~PO tunes. It’s called Streampad. Anyway, it’s been a few days, so I’ve uploaded 3 songs so far (one from each release). That should cover it for now. I’m testing this out because...

Work in Progress
Hi All,
So we have been in the studio these past few weeks, recording bed tracks, lots of guitar overdubs, etc. Actually our first official recording session was on Jan 19 and so far I’ve done 10 sessions at Chemical Sound towards this album. This may sound extravagant, but really none of these session were very long (typically 4-5 hours) and happen at “off times” between normal studio work when...

NOVELS gets some press
Novels is a band that features me (Dean from EX~PO) as well as Luke LaLonde (from Born Ruffians), Jay Sad, Will Currie (Country French), and Graham Wright (Tokyo Police Club). We were interviewed for the print edition of the Toronto Star (Sunday Dec 20, Entertainment page 2).

December 10th ~ A Fund Raiser @ Tranzac
Hi,
On Dec 10th we will be hosting a Fund Raiser to help Lesley Marino get to Uganda, Africa where she will donate her services as a documentary photographer to the NGO, Ryan’s Well. Ryan’s Well is very happy about Lesley volunteering her time and skills, now we just need to raise funds to send her there. Ryan’s Well is a great organization and they will benefit from Lesley’s photographic work...

gig announcements for this fall!
We have some show announcements to make.
On Thursday September 17th, we will be playing a 90’s tribute night, hosted by TWM’s, Dan Wolovick at Rancho Relaxo. No original material, just 90’s grunge. Should be a blast!
Later, on Friday October 16th, we will be returning to Rancho to perform one last time in 2009 (in Toronto anyway). This will be our BIG VINYL BLOWOUT, a final hometown send off...
